SAFETY ABROAD
- practical courses for safe gap year travelTravel is great! Whether you're backpacking in South America, trekking in Asia or volunteering in Africa, you're bound to have the time of your life. The majority of travellers won't encounter any major problems along their way, but if you're planning a gap year or career break it's important to think about safety as part of your travel planning.
Whether it's just to reassure yourself that you're doing the right thing to stay out of trouble, knowing you are equipped to deal with anything that does go wrong, or just being aware of local etiquette, customs and facilities, you can never be too prepared. It means that you (and maybe your parents too) can enjoy real peace of mind knowing that you're travelling safely.
Safety Abroad is part of Outreach International, the international volunteering organisation. We've been sending volunteers all over the world since 1998, including to Kenya, Nepal, Mexico, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Ecuador, so we have long experience of knowing how best to prepare for travel in Asia, Africa and South America. And via a Safety Abroad course, we can pass on these skills, not just to volunteers, but to anyone going travelling off the beaten track.
Safety Abroad courses aren't militaristic, survival skills affairs, like many other courses you'll read about. They're far more wide-ranging and not physically demanding in any way. They're simply about making sure you have all the preparation you needed for travelling and living in the developing world.
Practical, far-ranging courses in Somerset
There's a choice of a one day introduction to travel safety course or a two-day weekend course.
Our two-day courses give you all you need to enjoy safe travel abroad. Anyone is welcome on our courses, whether you're a student wanting to know gap year essentials, someone planning a career break, a seasoned traveller looking for the latest tips or practical advice. There's always plenty our experienced mentors can teach you.
It includes an overnight stay with us in our converted barn, in the heart of rural Somerset, near Glastonbury. The course incorporates a unique blend of seminars and role- playing exercises, including a few surprise ones along the way, and will include a copy our travel safety documents at the conclusion.
Our one day courses are a great introduction to travel safety abroad if it's impractical for you to do the longer course. This is a practical option if you're driving or taking the train from say London or Manchester, as you can do the course and be back home within a single day. We can meet trains if required.
